Passing the Torch

A Page of Remembrance and Legacy

A hand holding a torch on a dark blue background.
SAU1 Honors those who have left the fight for Power on this Earth.
We accept the torch to continue to fight for the rights of all people to speak up
for what they want and need.
May our work continue the legacy of those who went before.

Larry Kubey

Who passed the Torch on December 24, 2020

Larry Kubey began as a paid professional presenter with Self Advocates United as 1 in 2007, when SAU1 formed.  Larry taught thousands of people with disabilities, family members, and others about things important to him and to others with disabilities.  Larry loved to help others through his leadership, and especially enjoyed meeting and connecting with new people.  Larry traveled all over the state to learn things and to share what he learned with others.

In 2015, Larry made the courageous and selfless decision to resign as a paid staff person to join SAU1's official Board of Directors as a volunteer.  This was necessary as SAU1 became an independent organization that year.   Through his role on the Board, Larry oversaw and directed the work of the organization and the finances as well.

Larry loved to share his smile, sense of humor, and love of music with everyone at SAU1.  His passion for his and other's rights drove his professional and volunteer work with us.

Larry, the torch has been passed, and we will carry on.

Brad El

Who passed the Torch on February 25, 2020

Brad El joined SAU1 as a Power Coordinator in 2018.  His role included supporting our professional self advocate staff in connecting with and teaching groups of people with disabilities.

Brad's passion for supporting people with disabilities to speak up and be recognized for what they want and need made him an important part of our SAU1 family.  He always had a good word to say to, and about, everyone.  Brad modeled the power of true connection in one's community and lit a path for more opportunities.  He left a space that cannot easily be filled.

Brad, we have accepted the torch, and will continue the work.
