Self Advocates United as 1 gets SASE!

SASE is SAU1’s Self Advocacy Support and Empowerment project, funded by a grant from the PA Developmental Disabilities Council (PA DDC).

SASE’s goal is to support and strengthen statewide self advocacy in PA.  The work includes:

  • Support for the SAU1 Board to grow, learn, and meet regularly, by Zoominar and in person.
  • Sharing information, educating, and connecting people through the SAU1 website, teleconferences and webinars, newsletters, Facebook, YouTube, and  Twitter.
  • Ambassadors, SAU1’s staff who are also self advocates, who attend meetings and other events to bring the professional self advocate voice and view. Some of these meetings include:
    • Mental Health Advisory Committee
    • Information Sharing and Advisory Committee (ISAC) of the PA Office of Developmental Programs (ODP)
    • Provider Oversight Committee
  • Technical Assistance for Real Participation (TARP) to the PA DDC and other grantees of the PA DDC, on how best to include people with disabilities in their projects.
  • Zoominars and in-person events on topics important to people with disabilities.  These are talks led by our Ambassadors, self advocate staff.  Some of the events have been:
    • Let’s Talk about Relationships
    • You’re Not Alone:  Let’s Talk about Mental Health
    • A Quick History of Disability and Widespread Disease in North America
    • Yoga and Meditation
    • GoVoter
  • SASE in the past supported SAU1’s connection to, and work with, the Pennsylvania Youth Congress (PYC).
  • “The Pennsylvania Youth Congress advances freedom and justice for young LGBTQ Pennsylvanians through advocating for responsible public policy. As a youth-led organization, PYC represents citizens working toward safer schools and thriving communities across the commonwealth.”

SAU1 is proud and honored to continue to work with PYC in making positive changes in our communities and in people's lives.

You can learn more on the Pennsylvania Youth Congress website.

Self Advocacy Support and Empowerment (SASE) events is supported by a grant from the Pennsylvania Developmental Disabilities Council; in part by grant number 1901PASCDD-02 from the U.S. Administration for Community Living, Department of Health and Human Services,  Washington, D.C. 20201.  Grantees undertaking projects with government sponsorship are encouraged to express freely their findings and conclusions.  Points of view or opinions do not, therefore, necessarily represent official ACL policy.
