My Life My Way: The Power of Feeling Connected in Your Community

My Life, My Way Self Advocate Values for An Everyday Life Value Number 13 Connected

As people, we all want to feel connected to our community. Whether someone has a disability or not, being part of a community is what makes us feel as though we have a place in the world in which we live. For self advocates being connected means, “I am a full member of my community with respect, dignity and status. The people around me know me as a person, welcome and accept me.” A connection to the community will look different for different people.

Here are some ways we thought of to stay connected to your community:

  • Getting to know your neighbors.
  • Going to free community events such as meals, concerts, and other social events and meeting new people.
  • Becoming a member of a church or other group.
  • Volunteering with organizations you know about

However you choose to get involved, always know that you are valued and important. Speaking up and getting to know people is one great way to stay connected. When you speak up and use your voice powerful connections are made. So speak up, use your power, and stay connected!

Knowledge is power, use it to connect with us!
