December 3rd 2023, is the 31st annual International Day of Persons With Disabilities (IDPWD). It waS after International Human Rights Month.

Check out our post about Universal Human Rights Month. It will be posted on December 10th, which is Human Rights Day.

So, what is IDPWD? The IDPWD website tells us the United Nations (UN) has always believed firmly in creating a world in which all people are appreciated, accepted, and an important part of their society and community. The UN wanted to draw attention specifically to the disability community to help others understand the struggles that those with disabilities face. The hope is to create a more unified world where people with disabilities can take part in their society and community regardless of their disability.

The UN and IDPWD hope to accomplish this mission by:

  • celebrating those with disabilities and their gifts.
  • learning from those with disabilities
  • having optimism, hope for the future
  • acting so that all people, organizations, agencies and charities celebrate this day, and commit to a world with equal human rights.

We here at SAU1 work with people with disabilities and their allies to create an organization and a community that embodies the above characteristics. We celebrate not only how far we have come as an organization, but how far the disability community has come over the years.

We learn from the disability community daily because our organization is run by self advocates for self advocates. You can learn from our self advocate, too, by coming to one of our virtual or in person events. Our events are accessible for all. Check out our events calendar for more information!

Our optimism and our hope for the future of people with disabilities is what keeps our mission alive. We want all people with disabilities to be included in their community, which is exactly what this day is all about. We believe that knowledge is power, and we want to empower those with disabilities to use it!

Our act to help people with disabilities in Pennsylvania speak up and be the powerful self advocates we know them to be. This moves our mission forward so that we can impact people with disabilities, not only in Pennsylvania, but also around the world! So what do you say, can you take the time to celebrate with us today? Check out our website to learn more about how you can power up with us!

Knowledge is power, use it to connect with us!
