Did you know that December is Universal Human Rights Month? End Slavery Now tells us that Universal Human Rights Month was first enacted in 1948, after World War II. The United Nations (UN), a group of lawmakers from every country, decided that all people, no matter the color of their skin, what religion they practice, what country they're from, or their physical ability deserved certain human rights. They wanted to make sure to honor and respect everyone by creating a document that would tell everyone what they expected of each nation, and how each person should be treated.
Together, lawmakers drafted what is known as the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. This document outlines the 22 rights that each nation’s citizens should have. This document is the basis for many of the rights we enjoy today. It also is the basis for many of the laws that are in place to protect people. It is important that we honor the rights of every human every day, but we want to take special care to shine a light on this during Universal Human Rights Month.
Here at SAU1, we believe the rights of every person are important, especially the rights of those with disabilities. We have several free disability advocacy events each month, both in person and virtual, that you, your allies, and advocates can attend, so that you know what your rights are. Our events are put on by professional self-advocates, and they teach you how to live your life your way. These advocacy events point you towards resources that you can use to empower yourself and others. We can't wait to share our power with you! Check out our event calendar for information on the events we have coming up!
What better way to honor Universal Human Rights Month, than to learn about the rights that you have as a person with a disability. So come power up with us, and learn how to use your own power! We can't wait to see you soon!
