Transgender Awareness Week is celebrated during the first week of November in the United States. The UCLA School of Law Williams Institute says that “Nearly one in five teens aged 13-17 in the United States report identifying as transgender.”
The staff here at SAU1 are happy to support those in the LGBTQIA+ community. We advocate for the rights of all people, especially those in the disability community. We know from our previous work, that those in the disability community are very under-represented. This becomes shockingly obvious as you look at a cross-section of those in the transgender community that are also disabled. The 2019 National Survey of Health and Disability took a look at those that identify as transgender and also identify as disabled. Of that cross section, 66% report having at least one unmet medical need.
Here at SAU1, we want to make it very clear that we support all people. Whether you are part of the LGBTQIA+ or not, we are here to support you, and your right to self advocacy. Self advocacy for all people with disabilities is our mission as an organization.
Whether you yourself are transgender, or are supporting a loved one who is transgender, SAU1 is proud to support you. Please visit our resources page for a list of transgender support in Pennsylvania. You are not alone. We are here to help. We see you and we support you! Happy Transgender Awareness Week. Always know that your voice matters. Don't be afraid to speak up!
