As part of Disability Pride Month, we want to share what self advocacy means to those that power our mission. These quotes were taken directly from our board members and staff members.

SAU1 President, Alexa B., says, “It is important to me to be a self advocate because you can say what you want and need in your own life.”

SAU1 Vice President, Thalia D., says, “As self advocates, we have the right to have the space and freedom to make our own choices and decisions.”

SAU1 board member, Laura B., says, self advocacy is important to her because, “We all want to have equal rights like everyone else.”

SAU1 board member, Lori M., says, “Accessibility is important to me as a wheelchair user. Things like curb cuts, ramps, elevators, and accessible transportation. This is important for everyone with disabilities.”

SAU1 board advisor, Thomas H., says, “It's important to open doors to anyone that becomes a self advocate if they put the time and energy into it.”

Jordan W., who is shadowing the board says, “It is important for me to be a self advocate so that I learn how to speak up and others listen to me.”

Finally, SAU1 Power Coach Sonny O'Callaghan says, “I believe advocacy is important for a few reasons. It allows our voices to be heard and it allows for networking opportunities and making connections with people. Without advocacy it would be much harder to get resources or accommodations that individuals need to be successful in their everyday lives.”

If you want to take part in Disability Pride Month, you can do so by speaking up for yourself with our professional self advocates at any of our virtual or in person self advocacy events. You can find a whole list of events on our website. We can't wait to meet you and teach you how to speak up for yourself!
