My Life My Way: The Power of a Successful Life

August 19, 2024 | by sau1admin

My Life, My Way Self Advocate Values for An Everyday Life Value Number 11 Success

Success looks different for everyone. For self advocates, success means, “I am the best I can be in the goals that I decide. The people around me learn how to support me to achieve my goals.”

It is important to understand that everybody's goals for their life are going to be a little bit different. Some of these goals might include:

  • Living alone
  • Having a job
  • Being able to do daily tasks independently
  • Managing money
  • Getting around my community
  • And more

For us as people who experience disability to succeed, it is important for us to have an established support system that knows and understands our goals. It is also important that we are a member of the team that helps create these goals. Every goal that is set for our lives needs to be set in a person-centered way. It is only with the help of a supportive team, independence, and communication that we are able to succeed in our lives. Setting out a plan for success, means getting supports involved such as

  • Family members
  • Caregivers
  • Supports coordinators
  • And others.

If we are a part of the team that creates our plan for success we are more likely to succeed. Living a successful life, whatever that might look like for us is important to us being able to live our life, our way.
