My Life My Way: The Power of Health and Safety

October 8, 2024 | by sau1admin

My Life, My Way Self Advocate Values for An Everyday Life Value Number 12 Health and Safety

This week, we wanted to introduce you to the value of health and safety. To self advocates, health and safety means, “I am healthy and safe in all areas of my life. I and the people around me balance health, safety, and risk according to my wants and needs.”

Having people you choose and trust to support you helps make sure that you have what you want in your life. They can help you accomplish your goals, but also help you balance your health, safety, and risk. Don't be afraid to speak up for what you want and need.

To get where you want to be in life, sometimes you have to take a risk. As a human being, you have the right to choose things. People must respect your right to choose. You can ask your support system to help you think about your choices, and what may happen with each choice. You are responsible for the risk - what may happen with your choice. This is called dignity of risk.

When it comes to being healthy, for the disability community, sometimes finding good health care providers can be difficult. That is another reason why having a support system you choose and trust is helpful. They can help you navigate the challenges of finding good health care in an environment where you feel safe. Remember, you and ONLY the people you choose to support you, can help you understand your health, safety, and risk. Choosing the right support team is a great way to practice using your own power. Keep using your power to stay healthy and safe.
