As we celebrate Independence Day this July, we also would like to highlight what freedom means to self advocates. In their own words freedom means, "I have the same rights as all members of the community and I can fully use them. The people around me respect my rights.”
As a self advocacy organization, we firmly believe in the rights of those we support and serve. We fully stand behind the statement “nothing about us without us.” We want people to be able to understand their rights so that they can be respected and honored. We even have entire self advocate lead presentations about what your rights mean and how you can make sure they are being respected.
Self advocacy in the disability community has gotten stronger over the years, but we cannot continue to make improvements without your help. Please join us to learn all about your rights and see our advocacy in action. We would love to see you at our next presentation. You can be a part of change in your community. Knowledge is power, and we want you to be able to use it so that your freedom and your rights are respected.
