As we celebrate Employee Wellness Month, we wanted to take a moment and highlight the power of employment for people with disabilities. For self advocates, employment means, "I want to work and/or have other ways to contribute to my community. The people around me support me to find and keep a real job that I like with good wages and benefits or start and run my own business, and/or volunteer the way I want in my community.”
Here at SAU1, we take pride in the power of employment and being a part of something very important. We are an organization for people with disabilities run by people with disabilities. Our board members and many of our employees experience disability themselves. Did you know that the Bureau of Labor Statistics tells us that, “In 2023, 22.5 percent of people with a disability were employed.” Our board members all volunteer their time to make our organization run smoothly and efficiently.
It is through the support of people like you that we are able to develop a curriculum created by self advocates for self advocates. If you wish to see our advocacy in action, you can join us at a free self advocacy empowerment event.
Visit our Power Events page to find an event near you. If you wish to be a part of SAU1, we are currently looking for volunteers to join our board to help power our mission. You can also help power our mission and support the power of employment, by donating to SAU1. However you support us, we appreciate your support of the power of employment!
