As people, we all want to feel connected to our community. Whether someone has a disability or not, being part of a community is what makes us feel as though we have a place in the world in which we live. For self advocates being connected means, “I am a full member of my community with respect, dignity and status. The people around me know me as a person, welcome and accept me.” A connection to the community will look different for different people.

However you choose to get involved, always know that you are valued and important. Speaking up and getting to know people is one great way to stay connected. When you speak up and use your voice powerful connections are made. So speak up, use your power, and stay connected!
