My Life My Way: Communication and the Power of Speaking Up

My Life, My Way Self Advocate Values for An Everyday Life Value Number Two Communication

Last week we started talking about the Self Advocate Values for an Everyday Life. Last week we focused on advocacy. If you missed it, or just need a refresher, feel free to read about advocacy first.

Today we will be learning about the value of communication. What does it mean to those in the disability community? And why is it so important?

To self advocates, the value of communication means “I am listened to and understood; my input is valued. The people around me listen to me and communicate in ways that work for me.”

It is important to say here that not all communication is verbal. Sometimes people use:

  • sign language,
  • picture boards,
  • electronic devices,
  • and more.

What self advocates want people to understand is that not everyone communicates the same way. It is important to communicate in the way that works best for someone in order to have an open discussion. By doing this, you are allowing people to make their own choices and control their own lives. It may take some time and practice, but overall you will find that the disability community speaks up together with allies and advocates. We have a powerful voice!

One of the ways to practice communication is by attending one of our free, virtual or in person disability events. We want to hear your voice. So don't be afraid to come and speak up!
