Accessibility Coordinator

Hi, my name is Sierra Shipton.

I live in Mercer County and I am the Communications Coordinator for SAU1. I started in May 2019 as the Administrative Coordinator and became the Communications Coordinator in January 2020. At the end of January 2023, I became the Accessibility Coordinator.

It is important to me to be a self advocate because I don’t want others to decide what matters in my life and what doesn’t. I want to live my life, my way and not the way someone else thinks I should. Being a self advocate helps me let people who do not have disabilities know about things that affect people with disabilities.

I started at SAU1 because I believe in the mission and vision of SAU1 and wanted to use my skills to tell other people about what it means to be a self advocate, what SAU1 does, and help SAU1 grow.

My favorite thing about SAU1 is that we get the work done but we also have fun. We work as a team and support each other. I hope that I can help SAU1 connect with more self advocates so that they can have everyday lives, too!

In my life outside of SAU1, I like to read, spend time with my family, watch cooking and baking shows on TV, and write.

I graduated from high school in 2007. I have a bachelor’s degree in biblical and religious studies from Grove City College. I got my master’s degree in communications online from Spring Arbor University.

My vision for my everyday life is to have my own house, get married, have kids and have at least one dog someday.

I don’t have a pet right now, but I like dogs.

My favorite food is pasta, eggs, pizza, or grilled cheese. I don’t think I can choose just one!
