Eloquent: Able to speak up clearly and well

Clarifying: explain; make understandable

Present: there for; part of

Buckle in: get ready for

Advocating: speaking up to get what you (or others) want and need

Workshop: A sheltered workshop. Sheltered workshops are places for people with developmental disabilities to work, but they are kept apart from others and only work with others with disabilities instead of with people with and without disabilities.

Universal: Something that happens to many people, not just special to one person

Hesitations: Waiting to do something because you are not sure

Roller coaster process: A process that has lots of ups and downs, or highs and lows

Ventured: tried; went

Vision for Equality: the organization that Self Advocates United as 1 was part of when it first started.

Gauge: guess

Had your feet under you: felt comfortable in a new situation

Vibe: the feeling or mood of a person, place, or situation

Rolling with the punches: getting used to changes or things that happen that you were not expecting

Integrate: become part of something

Society: the community and world around you

Shunning: getting or keeping away from something

Gun-shy: careful

Fall by the wayside: to be forgotten

Step up: take action, get involved, do something

Get a bad rap: get a bad reputation; being unfairly judged or blamed for something by other people

Informing: telling

Affirming: agreeing with; supporting

Mentality: way of thinking

Graft: add to

Phrased: said

Instill: make someone feel something

Putting us all in those boxes: to think something about someone based on a little bit of information, or something about them, like the fact that they have a disability.

Cornerstone: foundation; a thing that something else is built or rests on; here it means, an idea that someone's self advocacy journey is built on.

As an aside: to talk about something different from what is already being talked about; the new thing or subject is an aside.
